For the most part, I really enjoyed this book--it had realistic characters, an involving story-line, and was a fascinating glimpse of early 20th-century San Francisco. The only thing that kept me from really loving the story was the hero's reaction to a mistake the heroine made as a young girl. I understand that at the time, girls were expected to be blameless--and I appreciate how the story explored the double-standard between what was expected of women vs. what men were allowed to get away with--but nearly 100 years later it's difficult to understand why it was such a big deal. If the book was meant as a treatise on purity, it's an effective one (although maybe the author really meant it as a treatise on keeping your mistakes to yourself! Equally effective, if so.) Overall, I loved the characters the author created, and how we follow Julia from her birth to adulthood and watch her change and grow through those years, but I struggled with the underlying premise.Product details

It's true that nothing really "happens." What I love about these turn-of-the-century San Francisco novels by Norris is the dead-on detailed glimpse of mores and society and the rigors of daily life at the time. If you don't revel in domestic minutiae of a bygone time, then no, I don't think the moral lessons (always gentle) are enough to stick it out. But I love it.
I read the entire book waiting for something to happen. It never did. The only interesting thing that ever happened to this woman was only eluded to and then only WELL after the fact. There are many worthwhile classics to read. This is NOT one of them.
This is a delightful coming-of-age book about the life of Julia Page. It would be appropriate for girls or women. I really enjoyed reading this book.
The story was interesting but the final chapter was just wrong & ridiculous !
