"Here is a writer at the top of his game. The result is a brilliant techno-thriller, the kind a young Clancy would be proud to call his own." -- HOMER HICKAM, Bestselling author of 'Rocket Boys'

A minor accident at a German nuclear power plant, a Biological Warfare attack on the British Embassy in Washington, DC, and a secret arms deal combine to drive a trusted NATO Ally into an illegal alliance with a rogue Middle Eastern state. With the world hovering on the brink of war, a handful of U.S. Navy warships must track down and destroy a wolfpack of state-of-the-art submarines.

Their enemy is skilled in deception, and incredibly lethal. Out-gunned, out-maneuvered, and out-thought, the U.S. Navy crews must throw the rulebook out the window, and become every bit as devious and deadly as their enemy. If they fail, the consequences are unthinkable...

"A timeless warrior epic. Jeff Edwards spins a stunning and irresistibly-believable tale of savage modern naval combat." -- JOE BUFF, Bestselling author of 'Seas of Crisis,' and 'Crush Depth'

"...fast and lethal. I read it in one sitting." -- PAUL L. SANDBERG, Producer of 'The Bourne Supremacy,' and 'The Bourne Ultimatum'

"... as close as you can get to naval surface combat without being shot at. Jeff Edwards has penned a fast, no-holds-barred thriller that never lets up. Highly recommended." -- JACK DuBRUL, Bestselling author of 'The Silent Sea,' and 'Havoc'

I thought this was a very good book on ASW warfare. Being a very old submarine sailor, (76 years old and having served on an old diesel electric submarine, the SS-425), my 45 year old experience was from the side of the undersea warriors. I think this was a very well written story and I particularly liked the way the author was able to change to the personality of each character in the story when he described their actions and mannerisms of each in their interaction with others in their group.

I also liked the technical descriptions, taking into consideration my lack of knowledge due to having served so many years ago. As described in the story, my experience is pretty much the same in that the advantages and effectiveness of each of the ASW elements are still pretty much the same today as it was in the late 50s and early 60s. Against submarines, surface vessels are the least effective, followed by helicopters either dunking sonar or dropping buoys and I thought the most effective were the fixed wing aircraft like the P3 who at night could drop sonar buoys and either drop bombs or torpedoes and we were unable to fight back against aircraft.

The only thing that I thought that didn’t ring true was the author’s descriptions of the interactions between the officers and enlisted crew, it seemed very informal to me. During my time in the service all verbal interaction between officers and enlisted was very formal and followed protocol. I was an RM2(P1)SS, (Raidoman second class drawing proficiency pay and qualified in submarines) and you just didn’t try to get friendly with the officers. Bottom line is that I found this story entertaining with all the requisite twist and turns present in all fiction, I gave it a 5 rating. So read and enjoy it.

Sea of Shadows edition by Jeff Edwards Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Edwards is probably the closest thing to Tom Clancy I've seen in years and years. This book is a page turning, techno-naval warfare focused on submarine vs. surface warfare. The primary characters (Captain Bowie, Chief McPherson, and President Chandler) are reasonably well developed and the leadership requirements of the military structure well formed. It's a fun, good guy vs. bad guy shoot-em-up well worth a read.

The book is punctuated by chapters on the development of the torpedo. It can be distracting but you can also skip them and come back later if you like, where upon you will learn a lot. So I don't have a problem with the quizzical decision to drop them in the middle of the book. Having said that, I deducted one star for the political machinations that were required to get the US and Germany to face off at all let alone to do so in such an artificially narrow manner. It would never happen in real life like this. Yes, it's a suspension of disbelief issue - some people will accept it, other will not.

And I would have preferred the middle eastern country involved to actually exist. I guess it's nicer to not have to insult, say, Iran but creating a fictitious country of Siraj reduced the realism of the book further. Not to mention that he had no problem making Germany and China look bad, so it seemed further stretched.

Still, ignoring the suspension of disbelief issues, I enjoyed the book very much and plan to read more by Mr. Edwards.
I'm a sucker for a good military shoot 'em up, and "Sea of Shadows" does a great job pitting surface ships against submarines, even if the political motivation was as flaky as the notional 'bad guy', German submarine Kapitan Stefan Gröler, suspected it would be. In fact, Gröler is not so much bad guy as seasoned sailor under orders, and if those orders require him to sink a few USN ships along the way, well that's just the luck of the draw. He takes no pleasure in it and while he is generally as silent as the diesel submarines he commands, I enjoyed his voice when we heard it.

After a tense opening sequence, then another with many deaths and lots of misdirection to lay the scene and introduce the characters, Gröler is pitted against USN Commander Samuel Harlen Bowie and the novel gets down to business. Which is, a cat and mouse chase across oceans as Bowie tries to out think and outflank a very capable foe armed with what Jeff Edwards seems to consider the ultimate sea warfare weapon, torpedoes. I know that because we get a **lot** of information about them, the history of their development and a travelogue of one particular torpedo that Edwards tries very hard to ascribe an emotional tone to. I'm not sure such detail is warranted, because while I saw they were pivotal to the action, knowing how torpedoes operate was not pivotal to my enjoyment of the novel.

This is a very technical book, but for every inventory of navy paraphernalia, we get an emotional insight or the frustration of political interference which keeps the plot and characterizations nicely balanced. And given the continual destruction of hardware - much of which is worth a literal boatload of money, the damage bill surely runs into the billions - and wholesale loss of life, it is not a foregone conclusion that Bowie will prevail.

It is set in the current day - or close enough not to make a difference to your understanding of technology and people - and Edwards minimally changes the geopolitical landscape so as to not name and shame a real country. But pretty much, you know who he's talking about regardless.

I enjoyed this so much I purchased another Edwards novel without worrying about checking reviews, or really, what it was about. I enjoyed that one to. So, if you like contemporary military action with lots of detail about hardware and procedures and logistics, mixed in with believable characters and wonderful shades of gray in motivations, I think you will enjoy "Sea of Shadows".
