Despite reading the 5-star review, I just couldn't get into this story. It was too "dated" for me, and seemed a bit like watching an old horror movie, like "Return of the Mummy". It was not very well converted to Kindle format. For example, the table of contents showed there were only 2 chapters when there are 18 chapters. Also, when there was what I think was a footnote, there would be an asterisk after a word, then a page or so later an asterisk explanation would be inserted in between two lines. Very frustrating to have to hunt for the explanation of a marked word and not find it on the bottom of the page. I also didn't care for the poems/songs that were kind of haphazardly thrown in with no formatting to indicate stanzas, or even individual lines—everything just ran together with an occasional line break thrown in. I was not able to make it through 3 chapters, even though I generally really enjoy historical fiction. But I hope that's just me, and that this book will appeal to others more.

Very good close to a lot of historical facts about Chaka
Talbot Mundy was a great writer who has been mostly forgotten about these days. At one time, he had fan clubs all over the english speaking world. His characters and stories have inspired many writers including Robert E Howard and Robert Heinlein. Beyond stating that "The Ivory Trail" is about a group of "white" hunters in "deepest darkest africa", I am going to leave it for you to read the story. Instead, I shall point out that the Ivory trail is considered one of his finest efforts. (This is said about a writer of many books and had many "fine efforts".) Even critics of Mundy acknowledged The Ivory Trail as a great book. Reference books have referred to "The Ivory Trail" as the archtype or best example ever written of the "white bwana hunter" style novels. One thing to note - this book was published in 1919 and is not what some people today would call "politically correct". If you read this book and like it, I suggest you try Mundy's "King of the Khyber Rifles" and his "Tros of Samothrace" series. They are even better than "The Ivory Trail". If you are about to read your first Mundy book, I envy you. I would love to feel again the rapture and enchantment I felt as I read "The Ivory Trail" and other Mundy books for the first time.
Well, yes, history is supposed to be dated, but writing style firmly rooted in 30's and 40's took its toll on m.
